MOT Testing in Newport, Isle of Wight

Two test lanes, so it’s easier to get a slot that suits you. Book online in a couple of minutes.

We run two MOT lanes and test more cars than most garages on the Island, so it’s usually easier to find a time that works for you. Book online in a couple of minutes, or give us a ring and we’ll sort a slot.

If something fails, you don’t have to take the car anywhere else. Our nine mechanics work on site, so we can explain what needs doing and give you a price before any work starts.

When your car needs an MOT

A car needs its first MOT three years after it was first registered, then every year after that.

You can have the test up to a month (minus a day) before your current certificate runs out and still keep the same renewal date, so there’s no need to leave it to the last week. Your expiry date is on your last certificate, or you can look it up for free on the GOV.UK MOT history service using your registration.

What the test covers

The MOT checks that your car meets the legal minimum for safety and emissions on the day of the test. It doesn’t look at the condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox; that’s what a service is for.

  • Lights, indicators and horn
  • Brakes, including the handbrake
  • Steering and suspension
  • Tyres and wheels
  • Seatbelts and seats
  • Windscreen, wipers and washers
  • Exhaust, emissions and fuel system
  • Body structure, doors and mirrors
  • Number plates and VIN

If your car fails

Faults are graded as dangerous, major or minor. A dangerous fault means the car shouldn’t be driven until it’s repaired. A major fault needs fixing and a retest. Minor faults and advisories still pass, but they’re worth keeping an eye on before next year.

Because the workshop is on site, most failures can be repaired and retested without the car leaving us. If the car stays with us for the repair and is retested within 10 working days, the partial retest is free under DVSA rules.

Booking your MOT

Use the Book MOT button on this page to pick a date and time online. If you’d rather speak to someone, ring us and we’ll book you in. Plenty of customers book their service at the same time, so the car is only off the road once.
